The Institute of Marketing in Malawi (IMM) is set to host a webinar on Thursday, 11th April, 2024 that dives into the role of storytelling.

The webinar will be facilitated by Bongani Chinkanda, who will make a presentation on how marketers can craft compelling narratives to drive integrated brand experiences.

Get to Know Bongani:

Born and raised in Malawi, Bongani Chinkanda was schooled in Harare, Zimbabwe before completing a degree at Rhodes University in Grahamstown.

Bongani is a strong believer in solving client business problems, specializing in the youth and mass markets, and is passionate about bringing big ideas to the people. He has a passion for developing entrepreneurs and leaders in the Creative Economy.

Bongani worked in trade and shopper marketing for companies including: Unilever, BP, Kraft Foods and Kimberly Clark from 2003 until 2008 before embarking on a career in advertising. He founded Dzuwa Media in 2008 to serve as a promotional goods supplier to the Malawian and Zimbabwean markets, growing into a brand activations agency with a mass market focus that included work in Namibia, Botswana and South Africa in 2010. Their blue chip clients included SAB, Colgate and Hollard.

In 2016, they merged with Stretch Marketing, now Elevator, to further extend their middle and mass market offering. In joining HDI Youth Marketeers in November 2017, Bongani’s dream of “African Brand Stories” was reignited through the growth of HDI’s collective. This passion has led to HDI expanding its presence in 2 more markets (Zimbabwe & Ghana) adding to Nigeria, Kenya, Ethiopia and Uganda. In May 2020, inspired by his entrepreneurial hunger, he transitioned from being CEO of HDI to Founder of Diaries of a Salesman & Managing Director of Bravado, A Brave Group Company.

On 5th March 2024, The Institute of Marketing in Malawi (IMM) held fruitful discussions with the Technical Entrepreneurial and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TEVETA) in Lilongwe. The IMM team was led by the President Isabel Kachinjika, Education and Training Director Mercy Kamanga and Council Secretary Fanny Namonde.

The meeting saw IMM and TEVETA partnering to develop a local marketing curriculum. The development of a local marketing curriculum bodes well with the upcoming Marketing Bill that IMM has submitted to government. Members will be kept abreast of the progress of this partnership with TEVETA.

Our objective:

To initiate the development of a locally tailored Marketing curriculum. This endeavor aligns perfectly with our ongoing efforts to advocate for the Marketing Bill in Parliament. Crafting a curriculum that reflects the unique needs and challenges of Malawian marketers is pivotal for our profession’s growth and sustainability.

Why is this initiative so crucial:

1️⃣ Empowering Malawian Marketers: A localized curriculum ensures that our marketers are equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in our specific market landscape. By addressing our country’s unique marketing dynamics, we empower professionals to navigate challenges effectively and seize opportunities with confidence.

2️⃣ Fostering Economic Growth: A well-trained marketing workforce is indispensable for driving economic prosperity. By nurturing local talent through tailored education, we strengthen businesses, attract investments, and ultimately contribute to the nation’s overall development.

3️⃣ Elevating the Marketing Profession: Establishing a local curriculum underscores the professionalism and credibility of our field. It demonstrates our commitment to excellence and ensures that our marketers are globally competitive while also ensuring that learning institutions adhere to prescribed teaching standards.

The Institute of Marketing Malawi (IMM) has released its first digital magazine, The Marketer.

This follows several years of hardcopy publications where issues relating to the market and how the marketing industry is evolving in Malawi and around the world were shared. The issue captures stories ranging from Malawi’s 2063 vision to Brand Malawi with some contributors tackling digital transformation and key economic drivers of our economy all tacked from the eyes of a marketer.

IMM Director of Communications, Daniel Ngwira, said it is important for Marketers to move with the trends. He said, “going digital is a top priority in every industry now and as Marketers, we set the pace. We are confident that being able to access this magazine from anywhere and at any time will provide convenience both to our affiliate marketers and other stakeholders of interest.”

“Thus, it is always captivating to learn of how other experts are faring in this ever-evolving industry of ours. I can guarantee that there is something in here for everyone, so get a copy”, he further said.

Ngwira added that the digital copy would create room for more publications throughout the year, keeping marketers informed on exciting developments in the industry and at IMM.

The online issue coming out for the first time will be coming out in several issues in the year while the hard copy will continue to be published and distributed during the marketers’ annual conference in October. As such, various companies and organisations are asked to already book their advertising slots and that work is in progress compiling stories for the upcoming issues.

The magazine is available at https://imm.mw/e-magazine/
